The Redheaded Outfield

by Zane Grey

Can three fiery red-haired ballplayers carry a club to glory? In The Redheaded Outfield, Zane Grey steps away from the western frontier and onto the baseball diamond, delivering a spirited tale of unforgettable characters, fierce rivalry, and the timeless excitement of America’s pastime. Filled with humor and thrilling action, this forgotten baseball classic proves that some of the best stories are found far beyond the Old West.

Behind the Story

  • Zane Grey knew baseball firsthand. Before becoming a bestselling author, he played college baseball at the University of Pennsylvania and even spent time in the minor leagues. That firsthand experience shines through in The Redheaded Outfield.
  • This story first appeared in print in 1915. It was originally published in The McClure Syndicate before becoming the title story in The Redheaded Outfield and Other Baseball Stories in 1920.
  • The famous redheaded outfield was inspired by real players. Historians believe Grey based the story on the 1897 Buffalo Bisons, including his own brother, professional ballplayer R.C. “Reddy” Grey.
