The Last Beacon

The Last Beacon

By Vincent Cowley

I observed the distant star from my temporary quarters aboard a Collective ship. The faint light flickered through a small viewport, casting an ethereal glow against the sleek, metallic walls of my cell. This perspective, though limited, was not unkind. I had been provided with relative comfort, a subtle nod to my status as a high-ranking enemy officer. The star’s dim radiance served as a haunting reminder of the hope and resilience I once defended, now seen through the eyes of an unwilling spectator.

The Collective ship, with its dark, imposing design and foreboding emblem, stood in stark contrast to the Liberty’s Beacon. A proud symbol of the Republic’s ideals, the station was now under threat from a relentless assault. As I watched, the Beacon’s emblem—an echo of an ancient Earth flag—seemed to shift its meaning quietly, from a symbol of freedom and peace to one of defensive aggression. In that moment, a forgotten phrase stirred in my memory: “The eagle has set aside the olive branch and fixed its gaze on the quiver.”

The sudden onset of red lights and blaring alarms signaled the start of the conflict. From my quarters, I could hear the Collective officers issuing commands with cold precision. The leader, known as the Shadow Sovereign, orchestrated this attack with ruthless efficiency.

“Captain,” an officer’s voice crackled over the intercom. “the Liberty’s Beacon is activating her defenses.”

Even in this restrained setting, I sensed the gravity of the situation. Through the viewport, I watched as the Liberty’s Beacon sprang to life—the familiar structure, emblazoned with its emblem, now bracing for impact. My pride mingled with a profound sense of grief as I saw the station I once served enduring such dire odds.

The Collective ship trembled with the force of the battle, energy beams and missiles lighting up the void. I observed the Liberty’s Beacon retaliate with precision, its exterior shimmering defiantly. Each explosion and counterattack bore witness to the fierce conflict unfolding just beyond my reach.

Through the viewport, I saw a Collective cruiser attempt to breach the Beacon’s defenses. Its aggressive push was met with a desperate counter from the station, which unleashed a barrage of defensive fire—each shot reflecting the crew’s unshakable resolve.

“The star’s light, reflecting off the station, illuminated the Republic flag emblazoned on the Beacon’s hull. For a fleeting moment, the flag shimmered against the darkness of space, its familiar patterns a quiet reminder of the ideals and enduring spirit for which I was now a prisoner.”

As the battle progressed, the Liberty’s Beacon began to turn the tide. The Collective forces, battered and outmaneuvered by the Beacon’s skilled crew, began to retreat, their attack faltering against the station’s resilient defenses.

The Collective’s AI announced with clinical detachment, “The Liberty’s Beacon remains unbroken. The Republic endures.”

In the quiet aftermath, as the Liberty’s Beacon held its position in the void, I remained in my cell, the memory of the flag’s reflection offered a sense of solace. Yet, beneath that solace lay the heavy weight of loss. Many brave souls had fought valiantly, and their ultimate sacrifices had paved the way for this hard-won victory. I could only hope their valor would inspire future generations and that the legacy of the Liberty’s Beacon, and the ideals it represented, continued to shine brightly, a beacon of hope, and freedom amidst the vast expanse of space.
